The walled garden was built at the beginning of the 19th century by the Campbell’s of Jura, designed and laid out as a typical Kitchen garden to provide the house with fruit, vegetables and flowers and run as such for many years.  More recently in the last 25 years the garden has been opened up to the public and landscaped with the visitors in mind, throughout this period all aspects of the garden have been run organically.

Situated on an island surrounded by the gulf steam and facing south, the garden can support a lot of unusual non hardy plants with the listed stone built wall and strategically placed shelter belts of trees helping to create this flourishing oasis among the rugged moorland of Jura.

The Garden at a Glance

  • Large Australasian collection
  • Tea tent in the summer
  • Plants, seeds and bulbs for sale
  • Stunning views
  • Admission: £2.50 for adults.  5 to 16 year olds £1

Visitors will find a large collection of Australasian plants collected in 1999 on a trip to New Zealand, Australia and Tasmania.  There are also a large variety of perennials, many allowed to self-seed creating a loose and natural style, with other shrubs and secluded corners resulting in a surprising mosaic of different moods.

The nursery sells a wide selection of shrubs, perennials, seeds and bulbs-all propagated and collected from stock in the garden.

There is also a lovely walk through the grounds of the estate, which brings visitors up to the garden.  For the more able bodies there is a long walk following the shore with fantastic views towards Islay, Mull of Kintyre and Ireland a guidebook is available at the notice board.

Outside the garden towards the sea and surrounded by a wildflower meadow you will find the tea tent where you can buy fresh home baking, hot and cold drinks and local crafts.  The tea tent is open 11-5, Monday to Friday throughout the months of June, July and August.

There is a £2 admission charge (unless you are staying in Jura House) which you leave in the “honesty box” located at the beginning of the walk with the notice board.  Please do be honest, every little bit helps and we greatly appreciate your support.
